Big Plans for Derbion

Mike Ashley Frasers Group announced big plans for Derby shopping centre.

Attracting more than 21 million visitors every year, the former Intu Derby shopping centre was bought by Cale Street Investments in 2019. Covering more than 1.3 million square feet, the Derbion is set for more change with hundreds of new brands coming to the centre.

Last week, it was announced that Frasers Group PLC has signed to take over multiple units in the centre, including the former Debenham’s store.

Derbion general manager Adam Tamsett said: “The retail landscape is continuing to shift, and our ambitious plans for the centre complement the rapid changes that retailers are facing.

“By taking an agile, forward-thinking approach, the team has been able to secure 200,000 sq ft of new leasings this year, an incredible feat given the current climate.”

Moving forward

With headquarters in Shirebrook, Derbyshire, Frasers Group will open a Frasers department store in the currently vacated area that used to be home to Debenhams. The store offers 127,000 sq ft of retail space covering three floors.

Within the department store, plans include a dedicated beauty hall, a new Sports Direct store (moving from Level 1) as well as hundreds of men’s, women’s and children’s fashion brands.

Additionally, Fraser Group has confirmed it will also occupy the former Topshop store on Level 2 with FLANNELS, as well as a further 50,000 sq ft of retail space in the former BHS department store.

John Forkin, managing director of Marketing Derby, said: “The team at the Derbion have really excelled themselves and it’s hard to underestimate how important this news is for the city.

“In the past 10 years £1.4bn has been invested into Derby city centre, with a further £576m in the pipeline.”
