Is Christmas a good time to buy a house?

If you are looking to buy a house then Christmas may be the best time to start the process.

2020 has been an incredibly tough year for so many. But the housing market has remained stable and forecasted to stay strong throughout January 2021. Which makes December the ideal time to buy a house.

Traditionally, the industry falls quiet over the festive period with a break in construction and time off for estate agents. However, more and more buyers are starting their property search in December. Why? To ensure they secure savings from the stamp duty holiday that due to end March 2021.

Here are four reasons why this month may be the best time to buy a house…

  1. Less competition

Many buyers postpone their house hunts until the new year. Meaning sellers will be visited by less viewers. This gives you a good chance with having an offer accepted as there are simply less people interested.

COVID-19 precautions has also meant that buyers are being vetted before they are allowed to view a property. This is to reduce time wasters and foot traffic in someone’s home. This also means that once you have been approved you will become priority to the agent to view properties as soon as possible.

  1. Stamp duty savings

Buyers can still save on stamp duty until 31 March 2021. However the race is now on to buy and complete in time. Meaning Christmas is the deadline to enjoy a substantial saving on properties under £500,000.

  1. Time to prepare

Are you planning to rent out your property? If so, January is typically one of the busiest months for the rental market. Buying a property over Christmas gives you more time to prepare for its new tenants.

  1. Sales

Take advantage of the festive sales that occur all throughout December. There are huge furniture savings to be had on Boxing Day including sofas, TV’s and more.
